![]() But if we push those feelings aside, we start to realize that an alien intelligence born here is far more dangerous than those that might come from afar. We may even feel a sense of kinship, viewing them as our own creation, a manifestation of our own ingenuity. Still, the façade will work – we will not fear these aliens – not the way we would fear creatures speeding toward us in a mysterious starship. Most likely, their brains will live in the cloud (fully or partially) connected to features and functions both inside and outside the humanoid forms that we personify them as. In fact, we humans will work very hard to make these aliens look like us and talk like us, even smile and laugh like us, but deep inside they will not be anything like us. ![]() Of course, we will create human-like bodies for these alien minds to inhabit, but they will be little more than robotic façades to make ourselves feel comfortable in their presence. It will not.Īrtificial minds will be profoundly different than any biological brains we know of on Earth – from their basic structure and functionality to their overall physiology and psychology. In my 2020 book, Arrival Mind, I portray AGI as “having a billion eyes and ears,” for its perceptual abilities could easily span the globe. We humans can’t possibly imagine what it would feel like to perceive our world in such an expansive and wholistic way, and yet we somehow presume a mind like this will share our morals, values, and sensibilities. To us, they will seem omniscient, linking to remote sensors of all kinds, in all places. But profoundly differentīut still, their minds will be nothing like ours. After all, we will have spent decades teaching AI systems how we humans behave in almost every situation. They will understand how we make decisions, for good and bad, logical and illogical. And yes, they will know us inside and out, able to speak our languages and interpret our gestures, read our facial expressions and predict our actions. Instead, we will build these AI creatures to know humans, not to be human. This is a common misconception – the false belief that by training an AI on data that describes human behaviors, we will ensure it ends up thinking, feeling and acting like we do. ![]() Instead engineers feed massive datasets into simple algorithms that automatically adjust their own parameters, making millions upon millions of tiny changes to their structure until an intelligence emerges – an intelligence with inner workings that are far too complex for us to comprehend.Īnd no – feeding it data about humans will not make it think like humans do. Artificial minds will not be created by writing software with carefully crafted rules that make them think like us.

![]() Photo (#6) is an example of construction paper I photographed using a kaleidoscope made with front surface mirrors, and you can see that all of the reflected facets are sharp. You can find outlets for this specialized type of mirror online by searching for front surface mirror. You must handle this kind of mirror gingerly because once you get a fingerprint on it, it is very difficult to remove without smudging or scratching the mirror. In fact, it’s very difficult to distinguish which of the facets are reflections and which one is the view straight through the kaleidoscope. A front surface mirror doesn’t have the protective glass surface, and therefore the image is not degraded. The way around this, if you want to spend the money, is to use front surface mirrors instead of the glass covered mirrors. ![]() This glass is not of optical quality, and looking through it at severe angles distorts and degrades the image. This happens because the mirrored surface we use is covered by glass (just like the typical bathroom mirror) to protect the delicate reflective surface. The surrounding facets are less sharp, and near the edges of the frame the quality of the image is significantly degraded. If you look at the kaleidoscopic images #1 through #5, you will see that there is a center triangular facet that looks very sharp. A kaleidoscopic effect is produced a pseudo-random walk (perlin noise-based) selecting a point on the original image, and then a symmetric tile is generated. If you have a wider angle lens, that’s great. I would recommend using at least a 24mm lens (on a full frame sensor camera), or an 18mm lens on a camera with a smaller sensor. The number of facets in the resulting photos increases as the width of your lens increases. To take a picture, I simply put the lens of the camera inside the triangle of mirrors, as you see in (figure A). I used duct tape to hold the unit together, and voila!, a kaleidoscope was born. To construct the kaleidoscope, I simply stood the mirrors on their ends and arranged them in a triangle such that the mirrored surface was inside. I had them smooth the edges of the glass so it wasn’t so sharp (this is important because cut glass is razor sharp), and now it was much safer to handle. I went to a glass shop and asked them to cut three pieces of mirror measuring 6x12”. ![]() To take pictures, it’s necessary to add a third mirror to form a triangle. Our kaleidoscope filter multiplies symmetries which allows to obtain beautiful ornaments online. The cost is around $5-$10, and it can be put together in just a few minutes.Ĭommercially manufactured kaleidoscopes have two mirrors inside of them set as a “V”. Several years ago I figured out how to construct a kaleidoscope that would permit photography, and I’ve always had a lot of fun with it. Use the Alt and Shift keys (Option and Shift on the Mac) to size the shape down leaving the middle in the same place and in proportion.I have long been intrigued with kaleidoscopic images, but it’s virtually impossible to photograph into a traditional kaleidoscope because the hole through which you look to see the beautiful designs is too small. Instructions: Slide the control to adjust the kaleidoscope angle. To create a kaleidoscope with Konva, we can use the filter and set the kaleidoscopePower and kaleidoscopeAngle properties. 10 hours ago &0183 &32 Image: Will Joel / The Verge. Then apply filter with filters() function. For example, you can make a duplicate of the shape and place it in the middle of the original shape sizing this second version down to a small size and then cropping the final image to a square shape. To apply filter to an Konva.Image, we have to cache it first with cache() function. You can drag outwards if necessary to add back in any of the image that extends beyond the outside of the image canvas. Use the crop tool to select around the canvas. Repeat this until the kaleidoscope is complete – four times in all. This duplicates the current layer and repeats the transformation on it. Press Control + J (Command + J on the Mac) and then Control + Shift + T (Command + Shift + T on the Mac). Duplicate this merged layer, select the top layer and choose Edit > Free Transform and, in the tool options area, select the middle bottom of the 9 point grid to fix the point around which the shape rotates. ![]() Neil soon discovers that Andrew is an incredible goalie and asks Nicky how the foxes can lose with someone like Andrew in goal. Neil realises that it wasn’t Aaron who had picked him up from the airport earlier and rather Andrew, who Neil realises is off his medication that was prescribed to him after he had almost killed four men who had attacked Nicky, and that was illegal for him to stop taking. When they arrive at Wymack’s apartment, where Andrew, Kevin and Nicky, the twin’s cousin were waiting. In the car the two discuss Kevin, and Neil explains to the reader, Kevin’s past and his ‘inseparable since birth’ relationship with Riko Moriyama, the two even tattooing the numbers 1 and 2 on their faces, until he broke his wrist and joined the Palmetto State Foxes. The two drive back to Wymack’s apartment complex, where Neil will be staying until the semester begins. The novel shifts to South Carolina where Aaron, Andrew’s twin brother, picks Neil up from the airport. Neil realises Kevin doesn’t recognise him and after an internal battle, he accepts Wymack’s offer. ![]() Kevin Day enters and tells Neil that they shouldn’t even take him because of his inexperience, but they want him because he plays like he has “everything to lose”. Neil goes to run but is stopped by the foxes’ goalkeeper, Andrew Minyard, who hits him across the chest with an exy racquet. Neil tells Wymack he won’t play for him because of Kevin Day, a former national champion who had recently joined the foxes line up that year and who Neil shared a gruesome past with. Neil mentions that the foxes are notorious for being “talented rejects and junkies” from broken homes. Coach Hernandez tells him the man is from a university and Neil discovers he his David Wymack, Coach of the Palmetto State Foxes. His coach, Hernandez, announces that there is someone who has come to see Neil and Neil, who has spent most of his life on the run from his past panics, but cannot get away before he sees a man he doesn’t recognise standing in the locker room doorway. The novel opens with Neil Josten after his high school exy team’s Millport Dingo’s loss, which had put them out of the state championships two games from finals. There has been no discussion, as of yet, for a movie or TV show adaptation for the series. The books, despite lack of promotion, have been rated best sellers on Smashwords and top ten in Amazon’s sports fiction category, and have an extensive young adult fan base on social media. The novels follow the protagonist Neil Josten on the run from his father and his father’s people, as well as Neil’s, and his team’s (The Palmetto State Foxes) journey to make it to the exy championships. ![]() The series contains three novels, the last of which, The King’s Men, was self-published March 31, 2016.
